Convert PDF to Word

Need to edit a PDF? Convert it to an editable Word (.docx) file. For digital PDFs, slimdocs preserves the layout and tables. For scanned PDFs, it automatically runs OCR so the result contains real, editable text instead of pictures of pages.

How to use it

1. Open the PDF → Word tool.
2. Drop in your PDF. If it's a scan, OCR runs automatically.
3. Download the .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.
4. Proofread — then edit freely.

Digital PDFs vs. scanned PDFs

There are two very different kinds of PDF, and they convert differently. A digital PDF — one exported from Word, a browser or design software — already contains real text underneath, so converting it to Word is mostly a matter of rebuilding the layout around that text. The result is usually very clean.

A scanned PDF is really just a stack of photographs of pages. There is no text in it at all, only images. To make it editable, the words have to be recognised first, which is where OCR comes in.

Automatic OCR for scans

When slimdocs detects that a PDF is a scan, it automatically runs optical character recognition (OCR) to read the words out of the image and rebuild them as real, editable text. That turns a flat picture of a page into a document you can actually change, search and copy from.

OCR is remarkably good on clean, well-lit scans of printed text. It is less reliable on handwriting, faint photocopies or unusual fonts, so for those it is always worth a careful proofread before you rely on the result.

Getting the cleanest possible result

A few habits make conversions noticeably better:

• Start from the highest-quality PDF you have — a sharp scan converts far better than a blurry one.
• Simple, single-column layouts convert almost perfectly; complex multi-column magazine layouts may need tidying.
• Always proofread OCR output, especially numbers, names and anything legal or financial.
• If a table comes across imperfectly, it is usually quicker to fix in Word than to re-convert.
